What is the difference between a globe valve and an angle valve?

Date:2023-06-09
Globe valves and angle valves are two common types of valves used in plumbing and fluid control systems. While both valves serve similar functions, there are key differences in their design and application:

    Globe Valve:
Design: A globe valve has a spherical-shaped body, hence the name "globe." It consists of a movable disc (also called a plug or disc) and a stationary ring seat. The disc is connected to a stem, which can be raised or lowered to control the flow of fluid through the valve.
Flow Path: The flow path in a globe valve is typically linear, meaning the fluid flows straight through the valve with a 90-degree change in direction. This design creates significant resistance to flow, resulting in a pressure drop across the valve.
Applications: Globe valves are commonly used in applications that require precise flow control and throttling. They are suitable for situations where the flow rate needs to be adjusted frequently or where a fine level of control is necessary, such as in water supply systems, HVAC systems, and steam pipelines.

    Angle Valve:
Design: An angle valve, also known as a corner valve or angle stop valve, has an L-shaped body with an inlet and an outlet at a 90-degree angle. It typically consists of a movable disc and a seat similar to the globe valve, but the disc is positioned horizontally within the valve body.
Flow Path: The flow path in an angle valve follows a 90-degree change in direction from the inlet to the outlet, which helps to reduce pressure drop compared to a globe valve. The fluid enters the valve from one side and exits through the side outlet.
Applications: Angle valves are commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing systems for connecting water supply lines to fixtures such as sinks, toilets, and faucets. They are often used as shut-off valves to control the flow of water to individual fixtures or appliances.
